Today's run was a short one: 6 miles. It's taper time, so we're not running as much.
In 8 days, I run the Rock n Roll half-marathon. The anxiety and doubt that was present a year ago is no longer there.
Supportive family and friends, a conscious contact with HP, and a great training program via USAFIT San Antonio, have all brought me to this point.
No fear. No worries. Next Sunday morning: 13.1 miles.
O yeah.
If you ate pasta and antipasta, would you still be hungry?

Ten Miles Today!
Not only did I run the longest distance I've ever run in my life today (ten miles), I met my goal of doing it at a pace of less than 13 min/mile! HELL YES!
Thanks to all my buds who sent text messages and Facebook messages to cheer me on this morning: Elizabeth, Cherre, Wayne, Jane, Noel, Shawn, Sharri, Michele, Deanna, Jacque, Veronica, Nancy, James, Maria, Deborah, The Other Michele Also With One 'L', Jennifer, Pam, and John. YOU GUYS ARE ALL AWESOME!
And a big shout-out to a loving and supportive HP, who helped me get from a place where this chemically-abused body could barely go up a set of stairs without wheezing, to being able to run ten friggin' miles! Holy shit, who'd have ever thought it?
I am exhausted. I'm going back for nap number two.
Rock and Roll half-marathon in November! O yeah!
Santa is so jolly because he knows where all the naughty girls live.

Longest. Run. Ever.
MILESTONE! Today I ran 8.1 miles. Longest distance I've ever run IN MY LIFE!
Next week will be nine miles. The following week will be a ten-mile race. So, two more HUGE milestones are approaching for me!
I could not have accomplished ANY of this without the help of a loving HP and the support of my wonderful wife, daughters, and friends.
YOU GUYS ARE ALL THE BEST!

Joined a Running Club
So far my longest run was awhile back at Hardberger Park. Nine miles.
(Did you know that you're not supposed to start a sentence with a numeral? You're supposed to write out the word. That's why it says "nine" instead of "9")
As I've mentioned before, my sweat rate is astronomical. I sweat worse than a cheap hooker sittin' in church with a five-dollar prospect outside.
(In the middle of a sentence, you gotta write the word for the number if it's less than 10).
The point is, I require much more water than the average runner.
So, to do that nine miles I had to stop about half-way thru at my truck to refill all my water bottles. Ugh. Annoying. And not something I want to do every five or six miles.
(Did you see the number rule in effect there? Good. You're learning!)
So I decided to join an organized running group: USA Fit San Antonio.
Two cool points:
1. They organize the weekly long run and plan the route. Love that!
2. They have WATER POINTS! Every five miles, there is a refill station where I can quickly refill my bottles with water or an electrolyte solution and get back into the run with only a few seconds lost. Very nice.
(WTF is an electrolyte solution? Look it up; learn sumfin'! ALL HAIL GOOGLE!)
Today we ran six miles. Avg per mile pace: 12:55. Next week, seven miles.
I hope to run the entire 13.1 miles at an avg pace of less than 13 minutes per mile.
(Do you see the new number rule? If not, Google it. ALL HAIL GOOGLE!)
If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

Prolific as Always
I see my last post was almost two months ago. For those that know me, two posts in two months constitutes an active writing lifestyle for me.
Big developments since my last post! A marathon-running buddy recommended I traing by 'heart rate interval' as opposed to 'training by pace'.
A little research (Google knows all--ALL HAIL GOOGLE!) indicates that heart rate interval training is a more effective method of preparing for a half-marathon.
Thus, I am now officially training by heart rate interval.
First, you gotta have a heart rate monitor. Luckily I had one stashed away. It came with my GPS watch. It looked uncomfortable and I figgered only elite athletes needed something like that. So I tossed it in my closet and forgot about it.
Big mistake. Have I mentioned I share a closet with a FEMALE? Finding anything in there is an epic saga in and of itself. But that's a story for another post. Bottom line is I finally found it.

Looking annoyingly uncomfortable, this sucker spent months covered in high heels and random junk. Now it lives in my gym bag and, three to five times a week, around my chest.
Then you gotta identify your max heart rate (MHR). The easy way to do this is a simple math formula:
MHR = (208 - [0.7 x age])
Although studies show this calculation may actually be off by +- 10 beats for some people, it is by far the least painful and sweaty way to calculate your MHR (the gold standard for finding your MHR consists of doing a treadmill stress test. Since I find it stressful to get on a treadmill anyway, I chose to forego this method and instead stuck with what I know--math).
Armed with a calculated MHR of 175 bmp, I did one last little calculation to get my heart rate intervals:
Easy Run (recovery--YAY! EASY!) = 65 - 70% of MHR = 105 - 123 bpm
Training Run (aerobic training--GOOD WORKOUT!) = 75 - 80% of MHR = 131 - 149 bpm
Tempo Run (speed training--UM, OUCHIES?) = 88 - 92% of MHR = 154 - 161 bpm
Intervals (sprint training--HOLY SHIT! PAINFUL!) 95 to 100% of MHR = 166 - 175
And that's the tale of how my training for the Rock & Roll Half-Marathon got a little more complicated.
I'm running out of motivation (and coffee), so I'll end here. If you're interested in pursuing this topic further, I suggest you Google (ALL HAIL GOOGLE!) heart rate interval training. You'll get a million hits.
You can probably also find some good articles at Runners World.
I'm not tense. I'm just terribly, terribly alert.

Longest. Run. Ever.
On May 22, I ran nine miles at Phil Hardberger park. Check out the park here.
This is a beautiful park, with miles of running/walking trails. I really like running here because the trails are well-shaded by trees. Makes running in the heat much more bearable.
But that's not the point of this post. In my 47 years on this planet, I have NEVER run nine miles. This was a first for me on the way to the Rock and Roll Marathon.
To get to this point, I've overcome funky knees, an old man's bad back, and asthma. Thanks to my lovely wife and my two wonderful daughters, I have the motivation and support I need to overcome and succeed.
If I can do it, so can you. C'mon out and run with me at Hardberger this weekend.
Oh, did I mention that this Sunday's run will be 10 miles? ;-)

If you're lucky, you may even see some wildlife while running the trails! This little guy came out to say hi at the two-mile mark.
Never stop. Never quit.

A Tunnel!
Today's run: 4.0 miles. Had a little trouble with the asthma. I think whatever the Hell has blown into town is causing me some issues. My handy-dandy iPhone app that tells me such things says that oak, hickory, pecan, and willow pollens are in the air in very high concentrations.
Yay.
But that's not the exciting part of today's run! I found a tunnel! A running trail over by Barbara Bush Middle School goes under Evans road via a drainage ditch.
Very cool. Check it out:
I ran thru the tunnel and snapped a picture while inside. Kinda creepy. Check it out:
And that's when the zombies attacked...
When the zombiepocalypse occurs, I only have to run faster than the slowest person...
Yay.

Good News, More Good News, and Some Bad News
Good news: My long run scheduled for yesterday was 4.5 miles and I made it with no problems! Hooray for me and my knees!
More good news: I learned something! My schedule got a little messed up yesterday so I couldn't do my long run until the evening. Thanks to that scenario, I got a little education in exercising! Hooray for me and my brain! It's always good to learn, right?
Bad news: What I learned was that doing strenuous exercise late in the day can have a seriously f-'d up effect on your sleep. I learned this at about 12:30 a.m. this morning as I was surfing the 'net, trying to figure out why the Hell I was wide friggin' awake.
Lesson learned!

Update for Rick
WUSSUP BITCHES?!?!?!
JimBob here. Rick's been WAY too busy bein' a corporate tool lately to update his runnin' blog, so he asked me to update it with the latest "411 from the Rickster".
He knocked out his long run on Sunday. FOUR MILES! Damn! And I'm thinkin', "Isn't Sunday the Lord's day of rest? You know, especially after a night of hard partyin' and illegally crossin' international borders in search of them peyote buttons?"
But noooooooo, he's been on that goddam "sober" thing for over 16 years now. You'd think he'd get tired of that after awhile, right? Nope. I guess it's stuck, cuz for some reason I just can't unnerstand, he seems to be really happy these days. Whatever--more Miller Lite for me!
Anyhow, back to the update. I think he said somethin' about he ran a couple other times this week, maybe three miles one day and some idiotic amount of miles some other day. 'Course that mighta all been a hallucination...them peyote buttons really packed a wallup.
I did get a good laugh the other day tho'. I think it was Wednesday (It's kinda hazy, but I'm pretty sure it was Wednesday cuz that's the day they come to shave my back). Anyhow, he came in from his run bitching (worse than a chick, you know?) about the buttons on his GPS watch. Apparently, they aren't "recessed" (whatever the hell THAT means) and when he wiped the sweat from his face (another reason I don't exercise--sweat? Not on this sculpted body!)...but I tigress.
Anyhow, when he wiped his sweaty face, he accidentally hit the 'off' button on his GPS watch thingie. Next thing he knows, he's thinkin' he's run about 3 miles, but when he looks at his watch it says only 1.5. So he had no idea how far he actually ran cuz his watch had been off most of the time! LMRAO! (laughing my redneck ass off, for you left-wing nutjobs out there. GET A JOB HIPPIES!).
I told him that's Sweet Jesus tellin' him to stop running and get back to drinkin' and partyin', but he just smiled like a goof and said something like 'one day at a time' or some such silly shit. Don't make no sense to me.
Geez, some days I wonder why I even park my pick-up in his driveway.
He left me a note on the toilet bowl rim this morning (he always leaves notes for me there so I can read 'em after my mornin' hangover puke). Said he's gonna try three miles tonight. He thinks he mighta hurt his knee at EZ's last night when he twisted in his chair, so it's gonna be a slow run just to see how it feels.
Hurt his knee? When's that boy gonna listen to Sweet Jesus tryin' to talk to him? Time to quit that runnin' crap and grab a Tall Boy!
Well nice talking to all y'all (even you damn hippies, I guess. GET A JOB!). But it's time for my game shows and I'm thinkin' a little hair of the dog would be right nice.
Rick said to post this little joke after I was done. I don't get it...

Long Run Today
A bit behind in my marathon training blog. I know because I was inundated with complaints from all my regular blog readers--all zero of them.
Let's play catch up: I ran three miles on Friday on the flat track at Fort Sam Houston. Very nice. I ran for time. Was feelin' cocky, you know, but wasn't feelin' too cocky afterwards...33 minutes exactly. 11-minute miles. Not bad, but not as good as I was running before I hurt my knee.
Patience, grasshopper.
Yesterday was short workout at the gym. A little upper body and a little on the legs. One o' the leg machines I like to use was broken.
Dang.
Today is long run: four miles.
O yeah.
Overheard at the gym: I’m not really into working out. My philosophy: no pain, no pain.

Technical Difficulties
Little bit o' pain on the right knee today. Slowed down and made sure to watch my form. It went away after a couple minutes and didn't return. Yay.
Anyhoo...
I was supposed to run an easy two miles today.
At the half-mile mark, my friggin' GPS watch crapped out, cuz I forgot to charge it.
Had to estimate the distance, so I figure I did about two miles, plus or minus three miles.
But I had fun--and that's Rule One!
Jokingly posted on Facebook that I needed someone to tell me when I had finished my two miles. Got lots of "supportive" comments from my oh-so-helpful friends.
In fact, 4 hours later, they are still telling me to keep running. LOL!
I'm not tense. I'm just terribly, terribly alert.

Geriatric Asthmatic Issues
Yesterday was three miles. I had to back off at about 1.5 miles, as I caught myself running WAY too fast...paid for it at the end. Ouch. Was huffin' and puffin' like an asthmatic 95-year-old when I finished.
That'll teach me.
Two easy miles today after work. Three miles again on Friday and then four on Sunday.
And now...a banana.
Life is hard. Then you die. Then they throw dirt on your face. Then the worms eat you. Be grateful it happens in that order.

On the Run!
3.09 miles today (GPS watch--too awesome!).
Average pace 11:48. Not bad, but I'd like to get down to 10-minute miles. One of my long-term goals is to do a 10k in under an hour. That's just under a 10-minute mile pace.
It'll happen.
Long run tomorrow! Four miles. It'll be the longest distance I've run since I hurt my knee...

The Last Test!
Yesterday was the last test of my knees before fully committing back to my half-marathon training schedule.
3.25 miles with NO PAIN! Not even a twinge.
As of today I am, once again, officially training for the San Antonio Rock and Roll Half-Marathon.
The date is November 13, 2011! I'M EXCITED!

3 Miles Today!
Got up early and decided to push it a little. Original plan was 2.5 miles, but felt pretty good once I got started, so I went for 3. Nice. No pain at all.
Followed up with coffee and washing my car in the driveway!

Shout Outs
Thanks to James for listening to me dream about this and helping me to realize it's actually not a dream, but a reality that hasn't happened yet (but will!).
Thanks to Jacque for sharing her massive training knowledge with me.
Thanks to Elizabeth for her insights and recommendations for running routes (along the highway? Really? Scary!)
Thanks most of all to Helen, Mary, and Jordan for listening to all my whining about: being sore, being tired, not getting enough carbs, getting too much carbs, it's too damn early (or late, or cold, or hot, etc) to run...and still supporting and encouraging me to go for it! I love you guys!
And thanks to my extended Bill & Lois family for all the support these past 16 years. NOTHING I achieve today would have been possible without all y'all!

Back in the Game
Last year sometime, in one of my less lucid moments, I decided that, before it's my turn to feed the worms, I wanted to run a marathon.
I have two goals: a half-marathon in 2011 and a full marathon in 2012.
Asthma and two bum knees (plus, according to my daughters, I'm OOOOOLD!), might be slowing me down, but nothing's stopping me.
Unfortunately, I have not been running since I hurt my left knee in December or January. I've been babying both knees, icing them daily, keeping them wrapped during the workday, only doing crosstraining and leg strengthening exercises at the gym.
AND TODAY WAS A HUGE MILESTONE! I ran an experimental two miles to see how my knees would handle it. No pain, and only a little twinge in my left knee!
I'm back, baby! Gonna continue icing, wrapping, cross-training and strengthening, but am going to do two runs per week for a month and see how the knees handle it.
WOO-HOO!
Those who say something cannot be done need to get out of the way of those who are already doing it!
